Spanish connection: Ossa 175 GT
A relatively unknown chapter in the history of Moto Morini is the business relationship to the Spanish company OSSA. OSSA is the abbreviation for "Orpheo Sincronia SA". The Spanish businessman Manuel Giro had a company which produced film projectors and accessories for cinemas. Giro dreamed of his own motorcycle factory and therefore he founded the OSSA. In the post-war period and up to the late 1950s OSSA built only small two stroke machines up to 175 cc engine capacity like other Spanish motorcycle companies did. But Giro wanted to offer also a four stroke motorcycle for some wealthier customers. There was no chance to think about an own development of such a bike. The important components for it such as chassis or engine had to be purchased for this project. Therefore he looked around for suitable business partners. He found them in Italy which was the leading nation in small four-stroke machines at that time. A very interesting detail in this context is that all other accessories for this OSSA like front fork, wheels, brakes, tank, exhaust pipe, muffler, instruments, lamps etc. were Spanish components and were not purchased in Italy although they look very similar to the corresponding Italian components.
As partner for the chassis Giro found Alessandro Colombo, a frame expert who had become famous with projects like the Bianci Tonale or the four-cylinder modells of Gilera. Colombo drew a suitable double loop frame for the new motorcycle of OSSA. In the case of engine Alfonso Morini was the right person. Engines from him were leading in their classes and had an excellent reputation.
In 1958 the corresponding contracts were signed and the development of the OSSA 175 started. OSSA could continue building the engine of the 175GT respectively 175 Super Sport in license. These engines were no longer built at Moto Morini. The engine housing was changed in the area of the engine mounts to the frame. The rear upper mount of the original Moto Morini engine was eliminated. In the OSSA motorcycle the engine was attached to the frame only at two points instead of three in Morini motorcycles. You can also find other minor differences between the original engine of Moto Morini and the engine built in license in direct comparison.
The machine was called OSSA 175 GT and development was finished in 1960. The technical data were mostly consistent with those of the corresponding modell of Moto Morini. Cylinder head and cylinder of aluminum matched the parts of the Morini Super Sport as well as did the bore / stroke ratio or the valve operating system using pushrods and rocker arms. With a compression ratio of 8.5: 1 and a 22mm carburetor from Dellorto 12 CV @ 7000 RPM were achieved. An ignition system with battery was technical standard of the time. The contact breaker was mounted to the camshaft. OSSA referred a maximum speed of 120 km/h. The OSSA still had half hub brakes with 160 mm diameter in the front and the rear wheel. The tyre size in the front and the rear was 2,75 x 19, a standard size of the gone 1950s. The tank had a capacity of 16 litres, allowing the bike to go for long distances. The two metal boxes on the right and left side underneath the saddle were very practical. 103 kg have been specified as dry weight of the bike.
Two series of the OSSA were built. The first version was painted completely in blue, the second one had a two-tone painting in red and white. A Regolarità version existed at least as a prototype. The production costs and hence the selling price of the OSSA 175 GT were very high in comparison to the Spanish competition with two-stroke engines. The OSSA attracted much interest, but only few were sold. In 1963 the production was discontinued after a total of approximately 600 copies. Accordingly an OSSA is rarely today. I've seen the OSSA shown here at this year's French meeting. Werner Wilhelmi
